Day Trip: Sam Bell Maxey House
Sam Bell Maxey was a US senator. He was also a Confederate general. As well, he was also a veteran of the Mexican war. Along with his wife Marilda they served an array of notable guests in their beautiful home. Their home, built in 1868 has enchanted many visitors over the years. Those living or traveling through the Sherman, Texas area are welcome and encouraged to view their magnificent home.
At the Sam Bell Maxey House you will be able to see the furnishings, photos and clothing that originated in that time period. For almost 100 years, generations of Sam Bell Maxey have occupied this home. In 1967, their home was donated to the city. In early 1971, their home became part of the history registry. The state of Texas is now the owner of the Sam Bell Maxey House.
Many have toured this lovely home and have enjoyed learning about the history of the Sam Bell Maxey family. If you are in the area of Sherman, Texas and are interested in sharing in this experience all visitors are welcome. Group tours, as well, are also welcome with advance notice if your group numbers ten or more. Groups that number under ten people may stop in to visit the Sam Bell Maxey House during normal hours of operation.
The Sam Bell Maxey House is open Tuesday-Sunday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The Sam Bell Maxey House is closed during the winter holidays. Admission rates are $4 for adults, $3 for ages 6-18.
