Red River Historical Museum
The Red River Historical Museum is a treat for any history enthusiast. If you reside in or near the Sherman, Texas area or just traveling through, take the time to stop in and visit this museum.
The Red River Historical Museum has a plethora of information on Grayson County, which is in Northern Texas. Once known as the Carnegie Building, Red River Historical Museum assumed ownership in 2005. In addition to the collection of over 50,000 items, the Red River Historical Museum boasts 48 stained glass windows. The museum also has three oil on wood paintings crafted by James Swann, a well known artist from this state. These paintings date back to 1934.
The Red River Historical Museum’s current exhibits include kitchen gadgets from yesteryear, an arrowhead exhibit, fire alarm telegraph system from the 1850s, the Butterfield Overland Mail Route, the Grayson County Courthouse and more.
The museum events include a lecture series, arts and crafts and more.
If you are interested in becoming a member of the Red River Historical Museum you can purchase an individual membership at $25 or a family membership at $50. The museum store as many items that are for sale, such as books, prints, historic postcards and more.
The museum’s hours of operation are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Tuesday through Saturday. The museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Admission is free; however, your support is appreciated. A nominal donation of $2 for adults and $1 for children will help to keep the Red River Historical Museum open so that everyone can continue to enjoy it.
