We are Now Sons and Daughters
Paul who was the author of Romans wrote the following scripture with a specific purpose in mind. His purpose was to help an entire generation of people understand that life, and relationship with God, had shifted in an unimaginable way. He wrote,
For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear. But you received a Spirit of sonship. Romans 8:15
The Israelites were taught from youth that in order to please God they had to follow over 600 commands and laws written in the Torah (the Book of the Law). I can’t imagine the pressure that this put on the lives of the Jewish people. Paul understood this pressure since he was raised in the culture and studied under a world renowned scholar.

In this verse he describes the pressure of having to constantly follow every law as a type of slaveship. It was void of relationship and meaning, and was motivated by fear. However after the death and resurrection of Jesus, Paul says that we are no longer slaves to the law. This does not imply that we do not strive to do what is right in the eyes of God. But the motivation for doing what is right has shifted. We are now sons and daughters of God. We are not bound to the fear associated with breaking one of the laws and commandments. Our Father in heaven is pleased that we are contending for our faith.
This is a truth in Scripture that sets us free from our past failures, hurts, and hang ups. “There is no condemnation”, says Paul. The law condemned us. Jesus reconciled us and brought into perfect relationship with God. We are Children of God. Forgiven.Restored. Heirs.
