Who Knows Your Name?
There’s a great story in Acts of the Apostles that goes like this:
“Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and I know about Paul, but who are you?” Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.” Acts 19:13-16
The demons made a very interesting reply..they knew Jesus and they knew Paul, but their response to the exorcists was a laughable, “Who are you?”
I think that this is a very good lesson for all of us. We can’t just go through the motions and use the right language. We can’t just be good leaders or popular cultural figures. We need to be known by more than just people here on earth. We need to be known by the demons.
When the demons and their boss wake up in the morning and look at their “to-do list” are you on it? Do they wake up and say, “We better tempt Bill today?” or “We really need to start working on Susan?” If you are not on their list, frankly it’s because they don’t need to worry about you…
However, if we are out growing closer to the Lord everyday, serving His people and winning souls for the Kingdom, then the demons will be furious with us. We’ll be on every agenda they draw up, be mentioned in every staff meeting from hell and be on the top of every list. And isn’t that the way it’s supposed to be?
